MC HammerThe success of MC Hammers single, Cant Touch This and album Please Hammer, Dont Hurt Em, earned the rapper an estimated $33m. This new wealth enabled him to buy helicopters, a $12m crib and keep an entourage of 300 people, whose wage bill alone was around $500,000 a month. His concerts often featured 60 on-stage performers and 100 people backstage. However, the earlier success wasnt repeated and he was forced to file for bankruptcy, owing more than $10m. This included $1m to two lawyers, $1m to his merchandiser, Winterland Prods, 750,000 in property taxes, $100,000 in income tax, a $500,000 loan from Dallas Cowboys player Deion Sanders and $110,000 to an interior decorator whose business failed after MC Hammer didnt pay him.

Its time to close out old business and stop being the lottery for people who see MC Hammer as this big celebrity with a bottomless pit of dreams for people. Michael Barrymore Bankruptcy in 2004

Michael BarrymoreMichael Barrymore was a presenter of light entertainment and game shows on British television. These include the highly successful Strike It Lucky and Kids Say the Funniest Things. The success of these shows led to Barrymore headlining the 1995 Royal Variety Performance and becoming one of the highest-paid television performers.

After the death of Stuart Lubbock in the swimming pool at Barrymores Essex home, his career nosedived. Although the entertainer was not charged by police in connection with Lubbocks death, he was unable to find any work after the incident, apart from appearing on Im A Celebrity His financial affairs worsened, and he filed for bankruptcy in 2004, after receiving a 1.4m tax bill, which he described as a surprise.

Lionel Bart

One of the worlds best-loved musicals. Oliver! was created by Lionel Bart, who wrote the music, book and lyrics. His rags-to-riches and back again life story is worthy of a musical Lionel Bartproduction itself. Bart, who died in 1999, aged 68, is often credited as being the father of the modern British musical, yet he passed away virtually penniless, relying on the help of friends and royalties from Oliver!, which producer Cameron Mackintosh had arranged after the writer had sold the rights.

His work and business sense were severely affected by his drinking and drug use, and he ploughed his personal money into his last two shows, both of which failed. In 1972 he was declared bankrupt, owing 73,000, estimating that he had lost more than 1m on these failed ventures.

By the time she was 22, Laura Wadsworth had five credit cards. She thought, mistakenly, that they offered free money and used them to buy clothes and holidays to the Canary Islands, Malta and Greece. At the time, Laura was working as a pub supervisor, and her 12,000 salary was enough to keep her. But she wanted the latest electronic gadgets, which were beyond her budget. A loan for her marriage was crippling, which is when she called Clear Debt to set up a debt management plan.

Money became a factor when she and her husband separated. It will take me years to pay back the 14,000 I owe, she says. I repay as much as I can afford, and I do regret it.

PR consultant Elle Murphy, 22, had to seek a second job to avoid bankruptcy after running up 23,000 in credit card bills. She had been trying to live a celebrity lifestyle on a salary of 16,000. She admits that she was obsessed with Radley handbags, which cost her at least 120 each. I looked at stars like the actresses from Sex and the City, and celebrities in magazines, and wanted to look and feel like them, she says. I couldnt afford to spend the thousands of pounds that I did.

Kerry Katona made bankrupt in August, 2008

It was reported when Kerry Katona was made bankrupt in August, 2008, that she owed the Inland Revenue 417,000 in unpaid taxes. This was reduced later to around 80,000. Katona spent a fortune on cocaine, property, fast cars and motorbikes. However, she found herself facing a tax bill of 82,000 when advertisement work, television and book deals were cancelled. After being discharged in 2009, she famously danced down the street.

At the time that she was declared bankrupt, in 2008, the former Atomic Kitten singer was said to be earning, amongst other things, 400,000 a year as a columnist for OK! Magazine and 750,000 as the television face of Iceland supermarkets. But her extravagant spending greatly reduced her reported 6.8m bank balance. She is said to have given a Ferrari, two BMWs, four Porsches, two Aston Martins, a Lamborghini, two Range Rovers, two superbikes and an Audi to taxi driver husband Mark Croft. He publicly admitted that he had bled her dry, following their split earlier this year.

Katona is keen to reinvent her media profile after losing her lucrative contract with Iceland supermarkets following a drugs scandal. The latest series of her reality TV programme is currently being filmed.

John Burton Race Bankrupt 2009

John Burton RaceAfter John Burton Races ex-wife was declared bankrupt, following an application for 15,000 from a creditor, the chef went bankrupt himself just two months later. Despite being awarded a Michelin star, their restaurant, the New Angel in Dartmouth, Devon, closed, due to mounting debts. Burton Race was in Australia at the time, filming Im A Celebrity Fortunately for him, Clive Jacobs, a friend and lastminute.com millionaire, bought the business, where Burton Race is again working as head chef.

Joe Swash 2009 Bankruptcy

Joe SwashJoe Swash, former star of Eastenders and winner of Im A Celebrity wasnt very good at managing his money, ending up in the High Court in London, owing 20,000 in unpaid tax as well as debt consolidation loans.
Joe has not been around to sort this out, said his agent, Becca Barr, at the time. The bankruptcy should never have gone through. Hes fine. Hes not in financial difficulty. There was a tax issue which will be resolved immediately. Swash has paid all but 20,000 of his 120,000 tax bill, and his assets are now under the control of the Official Receiver. The taxman is the only person to whom he owes money. A source at the court explained that he simply hadnt paid the money quickly enough, even though he had made efforts to avoid bankruptcy.

Jim Davidson OBE Declared Bankrupt in 2006

Jim DavidsonJim Davidsons services to entertainment, in particular with the armed forces overseas, earned the comedian and television presenter an OBE in 2001. Davidson claimed that he spent 10,000 every week on maintenance, taxes, agents commission and school fees, following a meeting with the Inland Revenue in 2003. Im still paying the same maintenance, commission and school fees as I did when I was earning five times as much as I do now. He was declared bankrupt in 2006, after failing to keep up payments on a 1.4m tax bill, which he had managed to reduce to 700,000.

George Best Declared Bankrupt in November 1982

George BestGeorge Best was the original superstar celebrity footballer. At the height of his fame, surrounded by fast cars and beautiful women, he was taking home 3,500, while other players were earning just 75. Bests most famous quote is: I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. Best was also a gambler, and was declared bankrupt in November 1982, with debts of 22,000. At the time of his death, George Best had an outstanding mortgage of 100,000 and he owed Londons Cromwell hospital 300,000 in treatment fees.
